Written by: Ms. Sheridan Musto, Head of Early Years Butterflies are fascinating creatures that have captured the imagination of our Kindergarten children throughout the past term, as they inquired about Living Things. With their delicate wings and vibrant colours, they are a joy to observe in their natural habitats. A visit to the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium was a great way to finish the inquiry, and get up close and hands-on with them. One of the key skills that the children learnt during the excursion was observation. They were encouraged to use their senses to observe the butterflies and caterpillars in their natural habitats, and looked closely at the patterns on the butterfly wings, the shape of the caterpillar's body, and the colours of both. Children also used descriptive language to describe what they saw, such as "the butterfly has orange and black stripes on its wings" and "the caterpillar has a green body with tiny black spots". Another important learning opportunity during the excursion was the chance to observe the life cycle of the butterflies up close. This involved observing the caterpillars as they ate, looking at chrysalises as butterflies developed inside, and finally seeing the adult butterflies emerge and take flight. The garden crew had organised a special butterfly release just for our students to witness. Children made connections between the different stages of the life cycle, such as how the caterpillar's body changes as it grows and how the butterfly's wings develop in the chrysalis, linking to their previous learning experiences in the classroom. Overall, the Kindergarten excursion to the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium was a wonderful way to teach children about the wonders of nature and the life cycle of butterflies. By incorporating activities that encourage observation and learning, children are able to foster a love of nature and a deeper understanding of the world around us.

Written by: Ms. Sheridan Musto, Head of Early Years Spring has sprung and what better way to celebrate than by taking our Foundation students on an excursion to Chul Farm at Sansiri Backyard. On this trip, students were able to learn about sustainable farming practices, feed and interact with animals, visit the butterfly house and get up close and personal with butterflies and caterpillars, pick organic vegetables, and even make smoothies using the fresh ingredients they collected. They were able to see firsthand how the vegetable farm operates and ask questions about the different animals and crops that are raised. Students were also given the opportunity to feed and interact with the farm animals. They learned about the different diets and habits of the animals, and even got to help with the feeding process. It was a great opportunity for them to learn about the importance of animal care and the role animals play in our food system. After the animal interactions, it was time for the students to pick their own vegetables from the farm's organic garden. They learned about the different types of produce and how to choose the best ones. It was a fun and hands-on experience that gave them a greater appreciation for the process of growing and harvesting fresh produce. Each child took home the vegetables they harvested, such as corn, parsley, and bok choy. To cap off the day, the students were able to make their own smoothies using fresh ingredients. They blended up a variety of fruits and vegetables, creating unique and healthy combinations. It was a great way to showcase the flavours of the farm's fresh produce and encourage healthy eating habits. To finish the excursion, the students participated in an egg hunt, where they were able to search for and collect eggs laid by the farm's chickens. It was a fun way to end the day and a great way to connect the students to the food they eat and where it comes from. Overall, the foundation students had an amazing experience on their farm excursion. They learned about sustainable farming practices, the importance of animal care, and the process of growing and harvesting fresh produce. It was a fun and educational day that they will surely remember.

On the final day of Term 2, our secondary school celebrated Songkran, the Thai New Year, with a fantastic event that brought our community together in a joyous celebration of culture and tradition. The celebration kicked off with a lively thai music performance by our talented thai teachers and students, who dressed in beautiful and colorful costumes that added to the festive atmosphere. Their music filled the air with a sense of excitement and anticipation for the rest of the day's activities. After the music performance, the water-pouring ceremony began with a solemn and reverent atmosphere. The ceremony was an important part of the Songkran tradition, and it was a great opportunity for our students to pay respect to the school heads, teachers, TAs, and nannies. Following the ceremony, everyone moved outdoors for the highlight of the celebration: the water splashing activity at the basketball court. Everyone had a blast splashing and soaking each other with water, and laughing with delight as they enjoyed this playful and traditional part of the Songkran celebration. Overall, the Songkran celebration was a wonderful way to end the term 2, bringing our school community together in a spirit of fun, friendship, and cultural appreciation. It was a great reminder of the importance of traditions and the joy that can be found in celebrating them with others.

Thai New Year, also known as Songkran, is a time of joy and celebration in Thailand. At the Soi 20 campus, our young learners dressed up in traditional Thai attire and floral shirts to celebrate the Thai New Year. The students participated in the traditional water pouring ceremony, where they poured water on the hands of their teachers, TAs, and nannies as a sign of respect and to ask for blessings. This is a significant part of the Songkran celebrations and is believed to wash away bad luck and bring good luck and prosperity for the coming year. The water pouring ceremony was followed by a fun-filled water fight, where everyone got to splash water and enjoy the cool water on a warm day. This activity is a highlight of the Songkran celebrations and is a way of bringing people together and creating a sense of unity and joy. The Soi 20 campus celebration was a fantastic way to wrap up Term 2, and the young learners had a blast participating in the cultural activities and having fun with their friends. It was also an opportunity for them to learn more about the Thai culture and traditions and appreciate the rich heritage of the country. In conclusion, the Songkran celebration is an essential part of Thai culture, and it was heartwarming to see the young learners at the Soi 20 campus embracing and enjoying the festivities. It is a testament to the school's commitment to providing a well-rounded education that goes beyond academics and includes cultural and social learning experiences.

The AISB Readathon is an annual event that promotes reading and raises funds for charity. This year's Readathon was a great success, with 75,390 baht raised for the Bookworm Foundation. During the Readathon, students participated in various events, including a Book Character Dress-Up Day, Pyjama Day, and a Book Tasting event for our secondary students. The Readathon also included a Teddy Bear’s Picnic for the Soi 20 students. We received a heartfelt message from Ms. Yoshimi, the founder of the Bookworm Foundation, expressing her gratitude for AISB's support. It's wonderful to know that our efforts have made a positive impact on the lives of children who lack access to books. These events were a fun way to encourage reading and help students develop a love for literature. They also foster a sense of community and allow students to showcase their creativity. Thank you to our AISB families who supported the Bookworm Foundation through raising funds. All of this hard work across our school has made a significant impact on the lives of other children. In conclusion, the annual Readathon is a fantastic initiative that promotes literacy and giving back to those in need. The various events and activities are a great way to encourage reading and build a sense of community amongst our students. We look forward to next year's Readathon!

Written by Allison Levine, School Counselor It was a lively Monday and Tuesday for the students to make plans for their future. On Monday students got to hear from schools and organizations from around the globe, both in-person and on Zoom to speak to the students about the numerous opportunities for their future. The students gathered on the fourth floor excitedly to hear speakers from such places as Japan, Australia, the USA, the United Kingdom, and right here in Thailand. We had lively and informative speakers from such universities as Binghamton, Arizona State, Chulalongkorn, La Trobe, Kyoto, and the University of Arts. Students got to get a taste of their possible future careers from such speakers as our guests chrome CTEK by APRTECH, Shannon White, the Red Cross, and Dr. Donna from MedConsult Clinic. On Tuesday students got to join with their parents to discuss with AISB teachers their various course choices for next year, and how it might relate to possible college and career choices. The students and parents heard information from the various teachers about courses such as; Art and Design, Maths, Biology, Physics. Music, Geography, and Business. The Careers Fair was a truly exciting experience for both the guests and the students. Some of the guests have already reached out and volunteered to speak at future events at AISB.

The talks will be of interest to parents of children 2 to 5 years old. The Presenter: The presenter is Lorelle Evans, from Australian Therapy Services Asia. Lorelle is a speech pathologist with over 20 years' experience in working with children. She provides telehealth support for children with difficulties in speech and language in international schools in Thailand. The Content: The series of four talks, delivered online via Zoom, will be held over a four - week period in March; they will cover communication development in children from 2 to 5 five years. The talks will help to inform parents and carers on that to expect from young children as they begin to talk and how to support their communication development at home. The talks are specifically designed for parents of children attending, or about to attend, international schools in Thailand. Session Structure Each session will include a 30-minute presentation, with reference handouts provided, followed by a 15-minute question and answer time. Parents are encouraged to attend all 4 sessions. On Wednesday, 2nd of November, the Student Council, parents and special guests gathered on the fourth floor of the Highfield Building for the investiture assembly. An investiture is a ceremony where the new Student Council members are officially inaugurated to become leaders and representatives of the student body. It was a delight to have our parents welcomed back to school for the first time since the start of the pandemic. During the ceremony, the Primary and Secondary Student Council members gathered to read out the pledge to symbolize the importance of our duties and for the special guests to understand our purpose as to why we are willing to become part of the Student Council. The Student Council Badges were presented by Ms Laura King to the members of the AISB council. The Chairperson and Co-Captain from both Secondary and Primary gave speeches about their visions, while I gave a speech regarding recent events that we had accomplished. The Potoroos did a wonderful job showcasing their understanding of this month's Bounce Back theme, Courage, through their wonderful slide presentation and entertained us by singing the song "Walking in the Jungle". Aomjan, Kindergarten Teacher and Coordinator Cultural Diversity Celebrations in schools provide a range of opportunities for children and families to celebrate differences, as well as promoting different cultures, racial and ethnic groups within our community. Staff support children to show respect for diversity by celebrating different events and activities, strengthening self-identity, and promoting inclusivity. Throughout the year AISB celebrates culturally diverse calendar events, such as Loy Krathong, Christmas, Australia Day and Songkran, just to name a few. Our first cultural celebration this year was our AISB 2022-2023 International Week celebrations at the Soi 20 Campus. Children were encouraged to wear their national dress or flag colours in parades, bring home cooked dishes from around the world, share their home and travel experiences with their peers, and bring books from home in all languages. We were pleased to welcome parents on campus to participate in a few of these celebrations and further develop our school culture and community. To further broaden children’s view of the world and their place in it, each class also had a focus country which they learned about. Classes explored the foods, art, music, history, sports and flora and fauna of countries such as Egypt, Brazil, France, Kenya and many more. At AISB we know that culture is embedded in one’s sense of identity. A child’s sense of Belonging, Being and Becoming (EYLF, 2009) plays an important role in children understanding themselves, their identity, as well as acknowledging and celebrating that other people may be different. We aim for our celebrations large and small to support and encourage children’s growing sense of self and belonging.
