Charlie Waites, a former AISB Student, becomes School Chess Champion in his new school in Australia
Remember Charlie Waites? This AISB primary school student (2017-2021) has been
making quite a name for himself in his new school.
From AISB to Australia: Charlie's Journey
In 2021, Charlie's family moved continents, settling in the
charming town of Geeveston, Tasmania - just 60 kilometres
south of Hobart.
Now a Year 6 student at Sacred Heart Primary, Charlie is
keeping the AISB chess spirit alive and well!
Sacred Heart's Chess Programme: A Familiar Scene
Interestingly, Sacred Heart shares our passion
for chess:
They host annual school chess championships
They have a dedicated teacher who encourages students to learn the game
And the highlight? Charlie has just claimed the 2024 School Chess Champion title!
A Delightful Reunion
Upon hearing of Charlie's victory, I couldn't resist a visit to his school. Imagine the
scene: stepping out of my car to the sounds of bush birds in the many tall trees that
surround the school, and after signing in, going into Charlie's classroom , sharing
AISB's chess legacy with curious Australian students.
The most heartwarming moments? Meeting up with a former AISB student, faraway
from our school, and informing Mr. John, the teacher who first introduced Charlie to
chess.
It truly brought everything full circle.
AISB's Chess Legacy: Fostering a Lifelong Passion
Since our chess programme began in 2011, AISB has:
Achieved numerous tournament successes
Cultivated a vibrant chess culture
Inspired students to carry their love for the game well beyond their school years
Coming Soon: An International Chess Challenge
Save the date for November! AISB vs. Sacred Heart, Geeveston in an exciting online
chess match! (More details to follow in October)
To Charlie: Your AISB family - friends, teachers, and especially Mr. John - are
immensely proud of you. You're demonstrating that the skills and passion developed
at AISB can flourish well beyond our school in Bangkok.
Wishing you continued success on the chessboard and beyond!
