As we approach the Christmas and holiday period, we are reminded that global citizenship is more than what we learn in school – it is how we act in the world around us. At AISB, our value of Global Outlook invites every student and family to recognise their role in shaping a kinder, fairer and more sustainable world. Holidays provide a wonderful opportunity to put this value into action in ways that directly support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Christmas celebrations often connect to important global challenges, especially responsible consumption (SDG 12), climate action (SDG 13) and reducing poverty (SDG 1). Small everyday choices can make a surprisingly big difference. Planning meals carefully, freezing leftovers and donating non-perishable items supports Zero Hunger (SDG 2). Choosing LED lights, switching devices off when not in use and limiting unnecessary electricity use contribute to Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7). Buying locally made, ethically sourced or experience-based gifts supports Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8) while reducing waste. Thoughtful choices, such as using reusable wrapping, recycling packaging and avoiding single-use plastics, directly strengthen Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12).
This season also encourages us to consider well-being (SDG 3). For many families, holidays can be busy and emotionally demanding. Simple actions like outdoor walks, tech-free family time, checking in on friends, or creating inclusive celebrations honour both mental and physical well-being. Sustainable travel choices, public transport, walking, or carpooling, further reinforce Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).
The SDGs also encourage us to protect natural environments. Beach clean-ups, correctly disposing of fats and plastics, choosing biodegradable products and respecting wildlife spaces all support Life Below Water (SDG 14) and Life on Land (SDG 15). This year, AISB also has a very tangible opportunity to take action through the Hat Yai Flood Relief Appeal, coordinated by the Australian Chamber of Commerce. Many families in the Hat Yai region have been affected by unprecedented flooding, and together we can make a meaningful difference. Donations will be collected at all AISB campuses until December 10th. Items urgently needed include:
Non-perishable food
Clean clothing
Blankets, towels and bedding
Hygiene and sanitary items
Basic first aid supplies
All items should be clean and in good usable condition.
Additional collection points organised by AustCham are open until 12 December
• Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park• Gateway Ekamai Shopping Mall• Pullman Bangkok Hotel G (Silom)• Pullman Pattaya Hotel G (Eastern Seaboard)
This holiday season, we invite AISB families to view the world as a classroom, one where empathy, responsibility and action shine brighter than any Christmas light. By working together, we not only strengthen our community but also nurture the global citizens our world needs.
Thank you for your participation in the Global Citizenship Community survey. Your input is essential in helping to shape a shared definition for what Global Citizenship truly means for AISB.
